Study reveals opportunities for NZ supply chain firms
New Zealand has “significant potential” to improve access for domestic companies to access the global supply chain market, according to a new study.
Commissioned by the New Zealand department of Trade & Enterprise and associated entity, the Industry Capability Network, the study was carried out by Australian management consultant Deborah Wilson Consulting Services.
The study recommends that players in the supply chain market should work together to bid for major projects and also link with other organisations further up the supply chain.
A local industry policy was also recommended for New Zealand, and this would include “future programs” to build the capabilities of NZ firms.
The stuidy also recommends that suppliers improve their visibility within the industry to win a greater market share.
Major challenges facing NZ firms, according to the study's respondents, when bidding for global supply chain work include:
- competition (28.7% of respondents)
- working within the chains (21.5% of respondents)
- bidders’ capabilities (12% of respondents).
Opportunities are to be found in the major supply chain markets, in major civil projects and in the wind industry, while the sectors of defence, health and IT also presented opportunities, the study said.
