Austal-built vessel to help Haiti aid effort
An Austal catamaran originally intended for a now bankrupt client in Hawaii will be used by the US Maritime Administration for relief efforts in Haiti.
The 113 metre Huakai, built last year for Hawaii Superferry, can transport people, vehicles and other cargo at speeds of up to 40 knots.
Huakai may serve as a link between Haiti and Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba or Miami, Austal said.
Hawai'i Superferry filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US court of Delaware in June last year, owing Western Australian-based Austal more than US$21m.
